Details : The Mae Ya Waterfall, located in the Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiangthong District, Chiangmai Province, is the largest and most beautiful waterfall in the park. It is 260 meters in height. The fall cascadesdown over thirty levels of rock cliffs. Some points of the cliffs offer large stone terraces where tourists can take shelter from the water currents that plunge downward, creating white water curtains.

The Kaeng Sopha Waterfall is in the Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, Muang District, Pitsanuloke Province. Due to its size and beauty, it is named the Thai Niagara. One point of the fall is where the Khek River flows past the large cliff. The torrents are very strong in the rainy season. The vapour arising in the area creates a vast rain-like curtain.

The Huai Mae Khamin Waterfall is located in the Khuean Srinagarinara National Park, Sri Swadi District, Kanchanaburi Province. The Fall is formed by the Huay Mae Khamin Creek flowing past the limestone mountains that are on different levels. It consists of seven levels, each of which is names as follows: Don Wan, Man Kamin, Wang Na Pha, Chatra Kaew, Lai Chon Long, Dong Phi Suae and Rom Klao.

The Man Daeng Waterfall is in the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park in Nakhon Thai District, Pitsanuloke Province. It is a large waterfall, consisting of thirty-two levels. Each level is unique. The stone slabs are covered with green moss and bedrock with pink dragon's tongue plants. This is a favourite venue for nature lovers.

Ecclesiatical Ceremonial fans or Monastic Fans are fans used by Buddhist monks when they are invited to perform religious ceremonies. H.M. King Chulalongkorn had monastic fans created to present to members of the royal family; for instance, royal birthday celebrations, royal house-warming ceremonies, royal coronation ceremonies or even for inauspicious events, such as royal cremations.

The four designs of the monastic fans on the stamps are the award winning stamp paintings from the 2005 International Letter Writing Week postage competition, under the theme "Ecclesiastcal Ceremonial Fans".

Details : The seals of the provinces in Thailand are derived from the official seals of the provincial governors during the period of absolute monarchy and the seals on the scouts' standards during the fourteen cycles or the Monthon admistration in the reigns if King Rama VI and King Rama VII. In 1941, the government, under the preniership of Field Marshal of Fine Arts was responsible for designing the seal according to the wishes of each province. Today, when a new province is established, the seal of the new province will be designed and some of former seals may have to be been changed or adjusted as appropriate.

This year's second stamp of the Åland scenery series features the municipality of Hammarland, situated in the western parts of main Åland.

The municipality of Hammarland is the third largest municipality in Åland. Andy Horner took the stamp photo, which shows the area Kjusan, spreading out close to the church of Hammarland.

Andy Horner describes the stamp motif:
"To me, the groves next to the church, blooming with wood anemones, and their enourmous juniper berry bushes and traditional grey fences, offer the most powerful and characteristic image of Hammarland. The combination of natural and cultural landscape is very tangible here. A piece of nature, formed by human hands since the Middle Ages, now being nursed to be preserved for posterity. Since the carpets of wood anemones have previously been featured on Åland stamps, I chose to focus on the equally beautiful lesser celandine. It is equally as abundant in this biotope, but usually attracts much less attention. I simply switched white for yellow."

This stamp is the Åland Post's contribution to the joint SEPAC issue.

Common Peony (Paeonia officinalis)
The peony is a family of herbaceous perennial plants with 33 species in Europe, Asia and North Ameria. Peonies have been grown since ancient times (originally in China) as ornamental plants, more than 10,000 simple and double-blossomed varieties with flowers in different colours have been bred. Some species are used as medicinal herbs. Sixteen species have been introduced into Estonia with mainly the spring peony (P. officinalis) and the Chinese peony (P. Lactiflora) with their numeours varieties grown in gardens.

Tiger lily (Lilium lancifolium)
The lily is a family of bulbous plants, with about 80 species in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Lilies are valued as decorative garden plants and cut flowers, with more than 3,500 varieties throughout the world. The best known varietes introduced to Estonia are the white-flowered regal lily (L. regale) and madonna lily (L. candidum) as well as the tiger lily, which grows wild in parts of Western Estonia.

Wild oriental rose, variety (Rosa ecae ‘Golden Chersonese‘)
Roses, cultivars and varieties of the rose family, are cultivated as decorative plants and to get rose oil and vitamin-rich hips. Inner and Southwest Asia is regarded as the homeland of roses and most bush rose species originate from there. Development of modern roses began at the end of 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. About 2,500 varieties of roses have been registrered, and there more than 1,000 taxons in Estonia (species, subspecies, cultivars, forms and varieties).
Rosa ecae 'Golden Chersonese', an oriental rose variety, is a simple-flowered hybrid of R. ecae and „Canary Bird” that blossoms in the early summer.

English Iris (Iris latifolia)
The iris is a family of rhizomatous or bulbous plants with about 300 (according to other sources 210) species mainly in the temperate zone of the Northen Hemisphere, particularly in the Mediterranean countries and Inner Asia. The English iris, also known as Iris xiphioides, is a common and attractive iris of the Pyrenees and Northwestern Spain, a bulbous perennial with many different varieties.

The Estonian Ornithological Society has picked the swan as the Bird of the Year 2007. One of the reasons for the choice was to give more information to the public about the three native species of the swan family. The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is known well enough thanks to its breeding habits, being common not just in natural landscapes but also in rural settlements and towns. In addition to breeding, the mute swan can be met in Estonia also while in passage and wintering.
The so-called yellow-beaked swans, the whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus) and Bewick’s swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) are much less known. At first sight it may seem difficult to tell the Bewick’s swan from its larger relative, the whooper swan. But on closer inspection we find that the bird is somewhat smaller and the yellow of its beak is not as intensive as that of the whooper swan. The Bewick’s swan is the most numerous swan species passing through Estonia, stopping in coastal waters, on large lakes and flooded agricultural lands. The whooper swan can be seen in Estonia both in passage and wintering. The whooper swan rarely breeds in Estonia, being wary of people and preferring out-of-the-way bog pools and small lakes.

The Badger (Meles meles) is an animal of stocky build weighing about 10-30 kilograms. Its fur is grey on the back, black on the sides , but its head is white with a black stripe running down its sides from the nose to the ears, surrounding the eyes.
As the badger loves both forests as well as rolling meadowlands, it is more frequently found in the south of Estonia than elsewhere in the country.
In sandy soil the badger digs large underground catacombs called setts, sometimes on several levels. Generations of badgers use the same setts over decades and centuries while expanding and refining them.
The badger eats anything that is currently available, starting from earthworms and insects to mice and frogs. In the autumn the badger feasts on ripe fruits, grain and peas.
The badger foragers at night or in the dusk and hibernates from November to March. The young (usually two to four) are born in March or April.

Juminda is the biggest peninsula on Estonia’s northern shore. To facilitate entry into Hara Bay and Loksa Port an automatic blinking light was installed at the corner of the border guard observation platform at the tip of the peninsula in 1931. Six years later, in 1937, a 24-meter lighthouse was put up instead. In 1981 the regime of the lighthouse was changed to automatic and the visibility of the light was extended to 15 miles.

In 2006 an upper part of eight metal cylinders was mounted on the former concrete shaft. The lighthouse now stands 32 meters high, the focal plane being at 40 meters. The Juminda Lighthouse is a cylindrical metal and concrete tower with a lantern and two galleries. It is red at the top, black in the middle and white at the bottom. In 2007 the Juminda Lighthouse will be 70 years old.

2007 has been declared International Polar Year. The Arctic Nations have joint to celebrate IPY with a joint stamp issue, which includes a series of really interesting stamp designs that show each country’s scientific efforts in the Arctic regions. POST Greenland’s 2 IPY stamps are engraved by Martin Mörck from Norway , and one of the designs is the artwork of Naja Abelsen from Greenland . The stamps are printed in combination print offset and steel engraving and are available in whole sheets of 40 stamps as well as a souvenir sheet with both stamps. All 8 of the participating countries’ souvenir sheets are also included in a special joint souvenir folder that will be issued on 22nd February.

This co-operation covers the 3 West-Nordic countries of Iceland , Greenland and the Faroe Islands . Chairman for the West-Nordic Council, Jonathan Motzfeld (former Greenland Home Rule Prime Minister and present Chairman of the Greenlandic Parliament) writes in Greenland Collector about the co-operation. In 2007 the 3 countries mark the 10th year of the West-Nordic co-operation. One of the aims within the co-operation is the extended use of hydro power. POST Greenland marks these efforts towards green and sustainable energy with a special stamp designed by Ina Rosing, daughter of Greenlandic stamps “Grand Old Man” Jens Rosing. The stamp is printed offset and issued in traditional whole sheets of 50 stamps.

Greenland has had its own branch of Amnesty International (AI) for about 15 years. Chairman for AI Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland ) Roland Thomsen writes about AI’s tireless work for increased respect for human rights. POST Greenland would like to support these efforts by issuing this year’s additional value stamp for the benefit of AI Greenland. The design on the stamp G377, value DKK 5.75+0.50 was created by artist and author Julie Edel Hardenberg from Nuuk. The stamp is printed offset and issued as traditional whole sheet with 50 stamps as well as a souvenir sheet with 4 stamps.

The first information about Sagadi, a former manor in the eastern part of the present Lahemaa National Park, dates back to the 15th century. Having earlier belonged to different owners, it passed to the Swedish adjutant general Gideon von Fock in 1684 and remained in the hands of the family until 1919. In around 1750 the earlier wooden house was replaced by a a one-storied mansion with a rococo façade. At the end of the century Gideon Ernst von Fock had it redecorated in early Classical style and added long side wings to the structure. A Neo-Renaissance balcony was completed at the back of the building in 1894. The large green in front of the house is symmetrically lined with outbuildings (storehouses, stables, servants’ quarters etc), as well as a park and an orchard. In 1929-1974 the mansion was used as school and later a forestry training centre. At present the mansion serves as the Sagadi Forest Centre, with a hotel, restaurant and forest museum in the outbuildings.

Daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare) are biennial or perennial herbs from the composites family. There are twenty species of daisies, mainly growing in southern and central Europe. Only one species, the oxeye daisy, is found in Estonia. Compared with other composites, herbs with composite flowers of white “ray florets” around a yellow disc, oxeye daisy leaves are not so prominently lobed.
The oxeye daisy grows in meadows, baulks and on roadsides and is valued for its beautiful flowers and long period of blossoming. It is often used as a cut flower, but is also planted into beds of perennials in gardens and parks. In folk medicine the plant has been used to treat various diseases.

The 45.6 meter Pikk Hermann, a corner tower of the former medieval fortress of Toompea in Tallinn, which now serves as the Estonian parliament building, has always been the main flag tower of the country.

The decision to fly the Estonian blue, black and white national flag from Pikk Hermann was first made by the government of the young Republic of Estonia on 12 December 1918 and it flew there until the summer of 1940 when Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union. Through the period of Soviet and Nazi occupations (during World War II), a total of 44 years, other flags stood at the tip of the tower. It was restored to its legitimate place in the days of the Singing Revolution, the Estonians’ peaceful drive to reestablish the country’s independence. The heart-moving flag-raising ceremony took place on the morning of Independence Day, February 24, 1989, one and a half years before Estonia officially declared the restoration of its sovereignty.

The flag at the tip of Pikk Hermann is hoisted every day at sunrise, but not before 7 a.m., and is lowered at sundown, but not later than 10 p.m.

Gadgetville lies close by the sea. It is a village where a competition on new gadgets takes place on the most important day of the year, Inventor’s Day. During the long and cold winter the best inventors of the village invent new gadgets to demonstrate them to the folks in the village on Inventor’s Day.
One of Gadgetville’s residents is Lotte, a small but energetic little puppy girl, for whom the 24 hours in a day are clearly not enough. It is because she immediately has to learn to whistle by means of the tows of her feet, find the pirates’ treasure from the bottom of the sea, pull up a rope between two chimneys and learn to walk on it. And then it is necessary to play hopscotch, tracking and soccer with her best friends, the kitten Bruno and the bunny Albert. Besides, she has to help Pippo, the little birdie, to catch up with her swarm about to depart for the south. On top of that it is necessary to send the bee Susumu back to Japan on a balloon. This would naturally be too much for everyone else, but not for Lotte. Let’s get on with it, she merrily declares, and there the cheerful party is taking flight towards Japan.

Källskär, a tiny island on the outskirts of the Åland archipelago, is today one of the best known tourist attractions of Kökar. In the large house on the island, above the mantelpiece, hangs a
relatively unknown painting by the ‘Moomin-mamma’ Tove Jansson. The painting will now be featured on a stamp to be issued 18 April 2007.

In the summer of 1958, the Swede Göran Åkerhielm went ashore on Källskär. With the help of the locals, he there created quite a different world with several special buildings and a peculiar garden. Tove Jansson became acquainted with Göran Åkerhielm when he asked her to do a painting to hang above his mantelpiece on Källskär. “Paint something with wild cliffs, and why not a hysterical fillyjonk, a sea monster or, for that matter, whatever you please”, Åkerhielm wrote in his initial letter to Tove Jansson.

Tove Jansson described their friendship in a letter to the Ålander Kjell Andersén, who has been the supervisor on Källskär for many years. The opening lines of her letter can be found on the first day cover. On the stamp sheet, the closing lines can be enjoyed.

In 1984, Göran Åkerhielm donated his part of Källskär to the province of Åland. During the summer months, guided tours to Källskär are arranged daily.

Barren archipelago scenery and shady hazel groves form the municipality of Kumlinge. The photographer Erkki Santamala has chosen a beautiful stony beach in the sunset as motif for the Kumlinge stamp.

The tiny municipality of Kumlinge lies in the middle of the sea in the Åland archipelago. Most of the 360 residents live on the main island of Kumlinge, but even the islands of Enklinge, Seglinge and Björkö have year round residents.

Kumlinge can brag of having the only airfield in the entire archipelago between Sweden and Finland. The airfield is open all the year round; it is, however, unattended. The 600 m runway is beautifully situated and is often used as training ground. However, the easiest way to get to Kumlinge is by one of the ferries operating in the Åland archipelago.

In Kumlinge, we find a post office and in Enklinge, there is a postal representative. Despite its smallness, this municipality has three shops as well as three banks. The stamp features a stony beach in Skaftö on a May evening. Skaftö is an uninhabited island connected to Bärö, where we find a restaurant located in an old coast guard station.

Mail planes: Saab 340 and Junkers F13

The Åland Post issues two stamps featuring mail planes in March.
The two stamps show an older plane, a Junkers F13 from the 1930s, and a Saab 340, a plane which is in service today.

A regular airmail service between Turku and Stockholm started in 1929, and Mariehamn was included in the service. The plane operated from the beginning of July to the middle of September. In the years to follow, the operation period increased successively.
In 1938, the airmail service started operating all the year round with two daily departures to Stockholm.

Today, the Post mainly turns to the airline Turku Air for transports to the Finnish mainland. Turku Air runs two daily flights, an early morning flight and an afternoon flight. The Post also uses Air Åland for transports. The Junkers F13 was used as mail carrier to and from Åland by the company Aero (present Finnair) from 1929. The other stamp depicts the airline Air Åland's Saab 340 aircraft.

The artist behind the two stamps is Peter Bergström from Åland.
He has previously made the stamps 'Valentine's Day' (2001) and 'UPU 125 Years', another airplane stamp from 1999. The two planes are featured in the air with the Åland archipelago stretching out below. The air routes of the two planes are illustrated on the sheets.

Postal labels, peony

A new series of postal labels, FRAMA, featuring old garden plants started in 2006. In March, the time has come for the second issue of this series and this time, we find Åland cottage peonies on the labels.

The Swedish artist Inga-Karin Eriksson has designed the 2007 labels with dazzling peonies spreading out across the label. In the background, two sailing boats sail by.

The cottage peony (Paeonia officinalis rubra plena) is the most common sort of peonies in older Åland gardens. It grows in the wild from France to Hungary and Albania. The Latin name officinalis shows that it has been used as a medicinal plant. In ancient Greece, the peony was well-known for its healing qualities and as a haemostatic.

Rubra means red and plena means full, whereas paeonia is the Latin generic term for all peonies.

A peony spray adorns the first day cover, and the motif of the first day cancellation is that of a peony bud.

The 2007 definitive stamps feature purple loosestrife, sea aster and beach angelica, three plants that thrive along the Åland waterside.

Åland nature is tremendously varied. The versatility of nature manifests itself in barren archipelago landscapes and lush forest meadows changing into flowering fields and lovely waterside fronts.
The rich flora of the Åland beaches was the source of inspiration for next year's definitive stamps.

The Icelandic artist Örn Smári Gislason is a new acquaintance to the Åland Post. Stamps, however, are not unfamiliar to Örn Smári. He has previously designed stamps for the Iceland Post, some of which are the series of flower stamps from 2005.

The colourful purple loosestrife decorates not only one of the stamps, but also the first day cover and cancellation. All three
stamps feature the flowers as close-ups and at a distance. The three different maritime plants are neatly lined up on the gutter pair strips to form an elegant whole.

Scott Base 1957 - 2007

Officially opened on 20 January 1957, Scott Base is New Zealand’s permanent research support station in Antarctica. It was originally designed to last just a year or two, but its enormous value as a centre for scientific research has seen it grow and flourish.
Today, the Base can accommodate up to 85 people, although around 375 representatives of New Zealand and international research institutes and other agencies pass through between October and February every year.

Scott Base – 1957 Opening Ceremony - 45c
Scott Base was designed, built, transported to and established in Antarctica within just 10 months, an astonishing feat given the logistics of the project and the climatic and operational conditions the building was required to withstand. However, the deadline had been set by Prime Minister Sidney Holland, who had committed New Zealand’s support to the 1957 Trans-Antarctic Expedition (TAE) and the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year (IGY).

Scott Base – 1990 - 90c
Scott Base – named after the great explorer Sir Robert Falcon Scott – became a permanent New Zealand station in 1962, maintained by the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme under the auspices of the (then) Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Since then, it has undergone a number of major redevelopment programmes, with new science facilities, equipment and accommodation blocks.

Scott Base – 2000 - $1.35
Of the original six Scott Base buildings, only three remain – the G and Y huts, and the A Hut, which in 2001 was renamed the TAE/IGY Hut to recognise its original purpose and to reflect its importance as the social and political hub for the two events. Today, the Hut is preserved as an historic monument and provides a quiet haven for Scott Base staff taking a break from communal base living.

Scott Base – 2003/04 - $1.50
Once a mixture of orange, red and yellow buildings, Scott Base is now a uniform green – a decision made in 1976 by the Director of DSIR’s Antarctic Division, Robert Baden Thomson. He suggested it would reflect the colours of New Zealand’s pasture and bush, but rumour has it that it reminded him of a trip to Ireland. Today, the colour is referred to as RBT Green, although it’s actually ‘Chelsea cucumber’!

Scott Base – 2005 - $2.00
Scott Base’s first 50 years have been a remarkable period in history. Tens of thousands of science days have been spent on and around Ross Island and the Ross Sea region, and around 10,000 people have visited the Base since it opened. Its facilities have also continued to improve, with the latest being the Hillary Field Centre – a heated all-weather storage facility named after Sir Edmund Hillary, which was commissioned in 2005.
